FLOWER CARE

Maximising the Beauty and Longevity of Your Blossoms & Co. Fresh Cut Flowers

Start with a spotless vase and clean, fresh water to minimise bacteria growth. Bacteria and fungi are present everywhere and can be absorbed by your flowers through the cut end of the stem. To prevent this, it’s essential to begin with a clean vase and fresh water. Don’t worry too much though! We provide a special flower food that contains antimicrobial properties to help inhibit bacterial growth and ensure your flowers remain healthy.

Opt for lukewarm water (30°C - 40°C) for most flowers as they absorb warm water more effectively than cold. The notable exception is spring bulb flowers like tulips, which thrive in cold water. Tap water is typically fine, unless it’s hard water with a high mineral content, which may hinder hydration. Avoid salt water—as flowers dislike it just as much as you do!

Use a Clean Vase and Fresh Water

Trim Stems and Remove Leaves

Cut the stems at an angle, trimming at least 2-3 cm from the bottom. We recommend a sharp knife over scissors to avoid crushing the stems and damaging their vascular system. The angled cut maximises surface area for hydration and prevents the stem from resting at the bottom of the vase, which could impede water uptake.

Remove leaves that will be submerged in water, as decaying leaves can promote fungal and bacterial growth, harming the vascular system and leading to wilting. Be cautious while removing leaves to avoid breaking the stem, which can allow bacteria to enter. Remember to keep some leaves above the water line, as they are crucial for the hydration process.

When a flower is cut, it stops receiving essential nutrients and water. Each box includes a sachet of specially formulated flower food designed to mimic the flower's natural environment and promote full blooming. Using flower food can extend vase life by up to 60% compared to plain water.

While various home remedies exist for prolonging vase life (like aspirin or bleach), we recommend our professionally developed flower food, which is scientifically formulated to provide necessary nutrients and protection. Our flower food contains a blend of sucrose, acidifiers, microorganism inhibitors, and agents that help to manage sediment and diluted salts.

Please follow the instructions provided and use only the recommended amount, as using too much can be just as harmful as not using it at all.

Use the Provided Flower Food

Check the water level daily and change it every 2-3 days. Cloudy water indicates bacterial growth, necessitating a complete water change. Refill the vase with fresh water as needed.

Re-trim the stems every 2-3 days, as flowers begin to die from the tips of their stems, reducing water uptake. Trimming approximately 1 cm off the stems regularly will keep your flowers healthy and extend their lifespan.

Keep your flowers away from direct sunlight and drafts, as they do not thrive in heat. If it gets too warm, consider moving them to a cooler area or even storing them in the fridge. If placing them in the fridge, avoid proximity to apples, as they emit ethylene gas that speeds up aging.
